I purchased the Brother HL-2270DW Laser Printer to replace my Lexmark X4850m All-In-One Inkjet Printer.
The Brother HL-2270DW is only a printer, and does not include a scanner. I decided to purchase a laser printer over an inkjet printer this time around, because a laser printer would better suit my current printing needs.
I don’t do a lot of printing, and, when I do print, I don’t really need color. I already have a stand-alone scanner, and I also might use the scanner on the Lexmark X4850.
So, in looking for a printer, I was primarily looking for price, lower maintenance, and printing quality. And, after reading many positive reviews about the Brother HL-2270DW Laser Printer, it seemed to fit the bill.
I bought the Brother HL-2270DW for 99.00 on Amazon.com, and it only took a few minutes to upack and set up.
The printer has wireless capabilities, but I decided to set it up as a wired network printer, using the ethernet interface. To do this, I connected an ethernet cable from the printer to a Linksys 10/100 hub, and then ran the installation CD on one of my older Windows XP desktop computers. Windows recognized the printer and the installation went smoothly.
I was a little more apprehensive about configuring the printer on my MacBook Pro. I initially had all kinds of problems connecting to the Lexmark X4850 from the Mac before getting Google Fiber, and, after getting Google Fiber, I was unable to connect using the MacBook AirPort and the printer’s wireless feature.
The Brother HL-2270DW, however, was a different story. I just inserted the installation CD and connected to the HL-2270DW over the network, with no problems.
As far as the printer itself, it is made of plastic, and feels very solid overall, however, the bottom paper tray did not feel as sturdy as I would have liked, when opening and closing. That is one thing I will watch over time, but I won’t count that as a criticism now. There is a separate manual feed area above the paper tray for envelopes and labels.
When printing, it is definitely louder than my previous ink jet printers, as it sounds like a small office copier. The print quality is very good, and it is fast!
